Safeguarding Dignity: Addressing Elder Abuse in Long-Term Care Facilities

Every year, on June 15, the world comes together to commemorate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a global call to action to protect the rights, well-being, and dignity of older adults.

This year’s theme,
“Addressing Abuse of Older Adults in Long-Term Care Facilities: Through Data and Action,”
calls for immediate attention to a growing problem: the vulnerability of the elderly in care facility settings.

As more people age, there are more older adults using long-term care facilities. Yet many such facilities are short-staffed and under-resourced, with insufficiently trained personnel, conditions that promote neglect and abuse. Indeed, a study supported by WHO revealed that almost 64% of care facility workers reported abusive behavior in the previous year. This is no abstraction; it’s an alarm bell.

We believe here at Dewdrop Group that dignity in aging is not an entitlement but a right. That is what guides our activities across our two pillars —Dewdrop Foundation and Dewdrop Institute.

Dewdrop Foundation
Through advocacy, prevention against abuse, and capacity building, we address the root causes of vulnerability among elders and create safe environments for older persons and children. We also equip youth and women with skills, knowledge, and empowerment to break cycles of dependency and inequality.
Our GHEEES Model of Community Development further accelerates impact in:
Governance, Health, Education, Environmental Protection, Enterprise, Security (with an emphasis on food security)

Dewdrop Institute
We train competent caregivers to give compassionate, ethical, and quality care to older adults, not merely cared for, but truly respected and dignified.

As we mark WEAAD 2025, we stand with older adults in long-term care everywhere. Let us move from awareness to accountability. Let us build systems that protect, not endanger. Let us invest in training, policy reform, and community engagement, because everyone deserves to age with dignity.
